Epidermal Leveling

Here at North Suburban Vision Consultants, we’re proud to offer an aesthetic division to our overall list of treatments.

It is our ongoing goal to offer you the best treatment in not only your vision and eye health … but with our customized skincare treatments as well.  After all, want the skin AROUND your glasses or contacts to be as healthy as your vision!

In addition to our customized skincare treatments, PCA Skin skincare products, chemical peels, BOTOX® Cosmetic and Juvéderm® anti-aging treatments, we’re proud to offer epidermal leveling, performed by our licensed aesthetician, Anna Nikiforak.

What is epidermal leveling?

Epidermal leveling is a mechanical form of exfoliation, similar in theory to microdermabrasion.  A sterile surgical scalpel gently removes the top layer of dead skin, the stratum corneum, along with fine vellus hair (peach fuzz).  The treatment is usually repeated every 3-4 weeks to maintain and continue results.

What are the benefits?

Epidermal leveling triggers the cell regeneration process, improves overall appearance, and creates a very smooth hair free surface for increased product absorption and smoother, more precise makeup application.  There is no downtime after receiving treatment.  When appropriate, this treatment can be performed prior to a chemical peel or oxygenating treatment to improve penetration and effectivity, for a more pronounced result.  In addition, because of its effects, this treatment is commonly performed prior to a special event, and  it is recommended that you have your epidermal leveling treatment at least 48 hours prior to the event.

Is it safe for all skin types?

Although the treatment is gentle and non-invasive, epidermal leveling is not appropriate for those with inflammatory skin conditions such as, but not limited to: open sores, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, active acne, or vascular lesions.  It is, however, excellent for hyperpigmentation, acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles, dehydrated and dull appearing skin.

Are there any risks or side effects?

The biggest risk during this treatment is a nick or cut from the blade, which is usually very superficial.  It is imperative to follow the instructions during treatment from your Aesthetician to avoid this.  If proper aftercare is not followed, your skin may become sensitized or damaged.   It is very important to follow the aftercare guidelines which include using gentle post-treatment products and the appropriate SPF application daily.

Will the hair on my face grow back thicker?

Removal of vellus hair will not cause the growth cycle to change to terminal hair.  It may feel different as it grows back since the edges are blunt, but this will not thicken or darken the hair.
