The Team Approach
If your child is having difficulties in academic performance (reading, writing, comprehension, etc.), he/she may have a deficit in visual processing and visual perception. This is best defined as how the brain interprets the information that is coming through the eyes and how the child functions based on that information. Based on information provided during the pediatric eye examination, we may recommend further testing in the area of visual processing and perception. Our doctors work in conjunction with other professionals who specialize in academic problems in children such as psychologists, occupational therapists, learning disability specialists, etc. We strongly believe in a multidisciplinary “team” approach to helping children with learning problems.

Good Vision for Children Aids Physical and Academic Development

Pediatric experts recommend that all children receive comprehensive vision care during their first few years of life. Many conditions could be present and possibly impede normal visual development. Functional vision is essential for fine and gross motor development, language development, social skills, as well as academic achievement.

By detecting and treating early, we ensure that your child can have normal visual function, which is critical during their developmental and academic years. A pediatric eye and vision examination performed by our pediatric experts at North Suburban Vision Consultants is quite different from that given to adults.

During your child's comprehensive examination, a variety of objective methods are utilized to assess eyes and vision. Our doctors are not dependent on subjective responses from our young patients. We use specialized instrumentation and evaluation methods that are not only efficient and accurate, but often are quite fun for our younger patients!

Children with undiagnosed visual difficulties may experience frustration and lack of interest in reading and schoolwork. Fortunately, with proper diagnosis and treatment, most of these conditions can be turned around quickly and the child will show a renewed interest in schoolwork and reading.

Two of the most important conditions to diagnose early are strabismus (eye turn inward or outward) and amblyopia (what is inappropriately termed “lazy eye”). Strabismus is found in approximately 4 to 5% of the population and amblyopia is found in over 2% of the population. These two conditions often go undetected early in the life unless a child receives a comprehensive pediatric eye examination. Early detection is key for successful intervention, which often cures these conditions.

Our team of experts recommends that all children receive a pediatric eye examination by age 3 as a baseline. Evaluation at an earlier age is suggested if you suspect your child may have an eye or vision problem.
