As seen on Comcast Cable Television

Dr. S. Barry Eiden of North Suburban Vision Consultants, Ltd. was interviewed on Comcast Cable Television by Oscar Adler, host of Adler’s Alley. Dr. Eiden discussed numerous topics relating to eye and vision care and the array of services provided by North Suburban Vision Consultants.

Contemporary eye and vision care is far reaching and every progressing in today’s era of high technology medicine. Dr. Eiden, president and medical director of North Suburban Vision Consultants, a multi-specialty eye care practice located in Deerfield and Park Ridge, Illinois, stated that cutting edge practices are constantly evolving in terms of diagnostic and treatment technologies. He sited areas of his practice, such as the management of glaucoma, where each year quantum leaps in knowledge based on ongoing research change the very essence of the care provided to patients. “Only a few years ago we would only institute glaucoma therapy if we were able to document specific damage to the optic nerve. Today, based on groundbreaking research, we can identify those patients at high risk for the development of glaucoma and begin treatment preventatively prior to documented damage to the optic nerve” stated Dr. Eiden.

Oscar Adler, host of the television program, asked Dr. Eiden “In what ways can we prevent other forms of vision loss?” Dr. Eiden responded that diseases like macular degeneration may be delayed in onset or reduced in severity by taking nutritional supplements containing antioxidant vitamins and other elements that have been studied and found to help in the disease. Avoiding exposure to ultraviolet light and not smoking are other ways to protect our eyes from macular degeneration. Macular degeneration is the #1 cause of legal blindness in people over the age of 55 and causes loss of central vision.

Dr. Eiden discussed new developments in contact lens technologies such as Corneal Reshaping Therapy (CRT) which involves the use of specialized contact lenses which are worn during sleep. The lenses gently flatten the central cornea at night. When a patient wakes in the morning they remove the CRT lenses and their cornea holds its flatter central shape which reduces nearsightedness (myopia) resulting in clear vision all day long without the need to wear glasses or day time contact lenses. “Research supporting the effectiveness of CRT is being published on a regular basis. At our practice hundreds of patients are enjoying the advantages of correction free daytime vision with the use of CRT” Dr. Eiden said.

Mr. Adler asked Dr. Eiden to discuss the advantages of a multi-specialty eye care practice. He responded by reviewing the numerous sub-specialists at North Suburban Vision Consultants including Dr. Darin Strako – pediatric eye care specialist, Dr. Stuart Sondheimer – ophthalmic surgeon and cataract & LASIK laser vision correction specialist, Dr. Carol Barron – low vision rehabilitation expert, Dr. Neil A. Boldus – residency trained in complex contact lens treatments and eye disease management, and Dr. Alphonse Serpico – who provides comprehensive family eye care.
