Optomap Computerized Retinal Examination
Advanced Diagnostic Abilities Without the Need for Dilating Eye Drops! North Suburban Vision Consultants introduces the Panoramic 200 Scanning Laser System for the screening and diagnosis of retinal, optic nerve, and other diseases of the posterior segment of the eye using Optomap retinal imaging technologies. The system has been developed by Optos Corporation in Europe and provides computerized imaging of the retina and posterior eye grounds using dual low-energy scanning lasers. Optomaps aid our doctors in the detection, diagnosis, and management of diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal tears and detachments, retinal tumors, diabetic retinopathy, and other ocular and systemic diseases. The procedure is fast, comfortable, safe, and above all is performed without dilation of the pupils! The Optos system utilizes low energy green and red scanning lasers to image the retina and associated structures in a matter of seconds. The images captured by the system are recorded and saved digitally on a network computer system at North Suburban Vision Consultants. Images are reviewed with your doctors in the privacy and comfort of your individual examination room, which has computer monitors linked to the Optos system. The images can view the retina out to 200 degrees from center, which is actually greater than typically obtained with a traditional dilated retinal examination. In addition, the dual green and red laser images can be individually evaluated which allows your NSVC doctor to determine the specific depth location of any detected abnormalities, thus improving diagnostic capabilities over traditional examination methods. The use of computerized digital documentation allows for long term storage of images so that comparisons can be made from exam to exam over the years. Most exciting is our ability to use the internet to e-mail retinal maps to specialists worldwide in a matter of seconds to provide "virtual retinal consultations" if necessary! Dr. S. Barry Eiden, President and Medical director of North Suburban Vision Consultants states, "Optomap Retinal Imaging is one of the most exciting new technologies available in eye care today. We are proud to be one of the first practices to bring this technology to our patients. They will be best served with improved diagnostic abilities and the wonderful convenience of not suffering from the prolonged side effects of pupil dilation following their eye examination." Optomap Retinal Imaging is FDA-approved and has been studied in terms of effectiveness at University settings worldwide. Dr. Thomas Friberg of the University of Pittsburg Eye and Ear Institute stated following a published study of the Optomap system, "I believe due to its clinical benefits, ease of use, and patient acceptance, the Optomap retinal examination has the potential to revolutionize how eye exams are performed and become part of the standard eye examination." North Suburban Vision Consultants is always at the cutting edge of technology and have already incorporated Optomap retinal imaging into our routine eye examination protocol! The advantages of Optomap Retinal Imaging include:
1 Optomap imaging is typically not covered under vision or medical insurance plans when used for routine screening for eye disease. A nominal fee is added to the routine examination fee to cover the cost of this important technology. Should any disease or abnormality be detected, your medical insurance (including Medicare and private health insurance) may cover this procedure and in such cases our practice will provide the service of submitting your claim to your insurance company for reimbursement. "I believe due to its clinical benefits, ease of use, and patient acceptance, the Optomap retinal examination has the potential to revolutionize how eye exams are performed and become part of the standard eye examination."
