There are numerous vision skills that can influence academic performance and learning such as binocular vision, near focus, and eye movement tracking. Simple vision screenings at school or at pediatrician offices frequently miss the presence of problems in these areas that can have a significant negative impact on school performance. Dr. Darin Strako, director of pediatric eye care services at North Suburban Vision Consultants (NSVC) suggests a comprehensive pediatric eye examination for all children by age 3 to 5, or sooner if problems are suspected.
