Steven Holcomb just won the gold medal in the 4 man bobsled at the Olympics. He has keratoconus and was treated with Intacs corneal implants to help his vision. This technology is a wonderful addition to the treatment armamentarium for keratoconus, however it has limited indications and limited effects for most patients. They typically still require specialized contact lenses to correct their vision properly, however it may be a way to avoid a corneal transplantation for some.

Diabetes is one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States. Proper eye care with regular visits is one way to reduce your risk of vision loss secondary to diabetes. In addition, excellent treatment and control of your diabetes is another way to minimize risk. A1C blood tests is an excellent indicator of diabetic eye disease.

The use of highly specialized contact lenses can provide vision, comfort, and cosmetic improvement when fit on eyes that have undergone eye surgery of various types as well as for eyes that have suffered trauma and disease. Only a limited number of skilled and experienced practices can provide this type of contact lens care for these patients in need.

Too many people give up wearing contact lenses when they start needing reading glasses over the age of 40 while others tollerate highly compromised vision when they are fit in monovision contacts. All of this is unnecessary when we have access to so many highly succesfull multifocal contact lenses. The doctors at NSVC are highly skilled and experienced with multifocal CL’s and we are continually involved in research and development of new multifocal contact lenses.

Contact lens care solutions are quite different in terms of their chemistry, effectiveness, and compatibility with various contact lens materials. “Store brand” solutions are NOT generic equivalents of the doctor prescribed branded solutions. They typically are older, outdated technologies with poorer cleaning, disinfecting, and comfort properties. Chain stores that private label contact lens solutions are now purposefully confusing the consumer to think that they are actual generic equivalents to brand name solutions. Proper selection and use of contact lens care products is a critical element that contributes to health and successful contact lens wear.
